A migraine diary is useful when it helps decisions. It should show attack frequency, medication days, symptoms, disability, and patterns without turning every day into detective work.

How to use it without overdoing it

Start with the basics: date, start time, end time, symptoms, medication, and whether you missed work, school, caregiving, or normal activities. Add triggers later if you have the energy.

If you are in the middle of an attack, log the minimum. You can fill in details after symptoms ease. A fast partial log is better than no log.

What to record

Track date, start time, end time, symptoms, severity, medication name and time, relief, nausea or vomiting, aura, sleep, meals, hydration, caffeine, alcohol, menstrual timing if relevant, stress, weather, and missed work or school.

What not to do

Do not use a diary to blame yourself for every attack. Migraine can happen without a clear trigger. The diary is there to help treatment decisions: diagnosis, medication timing, prevention, school/work support, and medication-overuse risk.

What to summarize monthly

Bring headache days, migraine days, acute medication days, missed-activity days, longest attack, and treatments that helped to your clinician.
